Fabolous - The Way (Intro)

Tonight the Philadelphia 76ers enter their 21st game of the year as they host the Orlando Magic, and while that may not sound overly exciting, it's games like this that can make or break a season.

The test

If the NBA were a college or university, then this week could easily be the Sixers mid-term exams. They will play the likes of the Magic, Bulls, Heat, in Philadelphia...travel to Atlanta to face off against the Hawks, and then they will once again defend home court against the Lakers next Monday, San Antonio next Wednesday, and the Clippers to round out that week on Friday.

Philadelphia is a good team, however the knock on the young squad is that they have beaten the best of the worst from around the league, including the Washington Wizards twice by large margins. Okay so the schedule has been fairly kind, but if the 76ers are going to advance further than the first round of the playoffs, then this upcoming stretch will provide a glimpse of their future possibilities.

They play a fast-paced run and gun style with a decent half-court pressing defense. Things have continued to change for the better under the direction of Doug Collins, and while most teams have at least one All-Star, the 76ers have established a good team first philosophy with some emerging names and tough role players. Time will tell if this is a recipe for success in South Philly, but with a 14-6 record at the time of my writing this piece...that's not such a bad start.

Yesterday Jorge Posada retired from the New York Yankees, after a a storied career which spanned 17-years in pinstripes. What was most intriguing, is that he played entirely with one club, and in this day something like that is as rare as it is admirable.

Change

The NBA is heating up, after a late post lock-out start. The complexity that is the National Basketball Association is always interesting, and now that the dust has settled...the talk of free-agency continues to loom large over a few teams. There are two names that keep owners, general managers, agents, and fans alike up at night...hoping, and praying that they can sign the likes of Deron Williams, or Dwight Howard.

Williams and Howard are the flavors of the month, and it won't stop until one or both of them are traded before the deadline in March. Deron Williams wants to stay with the Nets if they land Dwight Howard, and interestingly enough, Howard has New Jersey at the top of his list because of his former Olympic teammate Deron Williams. I see a theme here, nevertheless if nothing happens, which I highly doubt...they can sign with any franchise as free agents this summer.

As I stated at the outset it's extremely rare for an athlete to stay put for the duration of their career, no matter what the case in Orlando, if Dwight Howard stays or leaves...he became the all-time scoring leader for the franchise as of yesterday surpassing Nick Anderson.

Stay tuned sports fans, as this season will only bring more surprises.

The NFL playoffs have begun and the NFC Divisional game yesterday proved something that I witnessed on Sunday, October 2, 2011.

Business as usual

When I was child all of my friends either cheered for the hometown team, or the San Francisco 49ers, and the reason is simple...as kids growing up on the east coast it was easy to see the greatness of the franchise that had players like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, Steve Young, Ronnie Lott, John Taylor, and Deion Sanders.

The 49ers played the Philadelphia Eagles this season, and once the dust settled, it was evident that this team had plenty of fight, and a never quit attitude. On Saturday afternoon they proved to the world their legitimacy in an intense 36-32 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

San Francisco was able to keep their composure on offense, defense, and special teams, in a game that had several lead changes, and 5 costly turnovers by the Saints. Nevertheless, Drew Brees completed a touchdown pass with 1:37 to go in the 4th quarter, setting the stage for Alex Smith to throw the winning 14-yard touchdown to Vernon Davis with 9 seconds left.

The 49ers are back in the NFC Championship game, and from here, anything they accomplish shouldn't take anyone by surprise.

In the meantime, we'll wait and see.

Jay-Z - Politics As Usual

The 66-game shortened NBA season is a week old, but it's too early to do an in depth analysis. There have been some major changes in Los Angeles, Dallas, and New York, however the new year will certainly bring excitement, and surprise in the upcoming months.

Consistency

On New Year's Eve the Lakers outlasted the Nuggets 92-89 as Andrew Bynum returned to the lineup after sitting out 4-games due to a suspension that carried over from the playoffs. He played well scoring 29-points while securing 13-rebounds, Derek Fisher made the ultimate hustle play that saved the game and could have more than likely set the tone for the season.

With all the changes to the Lakers; Coach Mike Brown, Metta World Peace, and the Lamar Odom trade to Dallas, one thing has remained the same, and that is Kobe Bryant. Just when it seems that his reign as one of the best players in the league will come to a close, he continues to move forward, playing through injury, change, and milestones.

Sunday night in the second game of a back-to-back against the Nuggets he struggled early and never shook off the shooting woes as Denver won 99-90, finishing the game on an 11-0 run.

Bryant entered the contest needing only 4-points to become the youngest player to reach the 28K plateau, which he achieved on a free-throw at the 10:43 mark of the 3rd quarter. He now stands at 6th in all-time scoring, and will need 584-points to eclipse the next closest player, Shaquille O'Neal.

The saga continues tonight as the Lakers host the Rockets at the Staples Center.

Chuck D - Fight the Power

Floyd Mayweather entered the ring with a perfect record last night...and when everything was said and done, he left the arena in a flurry of controversy.

Fight Night

Wilt Chamberlain once said 'nobody loves goliath...and when it comes to a certain wealthy, brash, undefeated boxer...I'd say that statement holds true. Money Mayweather will easily enter the boxing hall of fame, however, for as many people that love him...there are twice as many that despise him.

To prove my point, there have been more stories and reports in the aftermath about a sucker punch and verbal battle with Larry Merchant, than recap on how Floyd Mayweather dominated Ortiz from the opening round.

My favorite pugilists of all-time are Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Bernard Hopkins, and Floyd Mayweather. Two of the aforementioned names I've seen, and I think it's important to celebrate an athlete's brilliance before they retire.

Money speaks his mind, and he backs it up...what I admire most about him is his business acumen. His payment from the event yesterday comes from numerous sides, including pay-per-view, and the concession stands.

The man is a boxing genius, and the longer he waits to fight Manny Pacquiao...the more money and fanfare he will command.

Baseball is a numbers game deeply rooted in milestones. From Hank Aaron's 755 HR's...to DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, and Lou Gehrig's 2131 consecutive games played...the history of the sport is all mathematics.

Dreams

Derek Jeter entered today's game against the Rays standing on the verge of career hit number 3,000. In true Yankee fashion he etched his name in the history books on a solo home run in the 3rd-inning. The magic didn't stop there, as he led his team to a 5-4 victory, on a perfect 5 for 5 outing along with the winning RBI.

All his home runs have been memorable, mainly because he rarely hits any. Two stand out as I reflect: the first November HR in baseball history, and today's blast over the left-field wall.

What mattered most to Derek Jeter today was the win, as he expressed his feelings post game saying, "the most important thing is that we were able to win."

The Yankees are one of the top teams in baseball trailing the Red Sox and Phillies for the best record. The mission for any team is to win the World Series, and if the Captain has anything to do with it...he'd like nothing more than to add another ring to his legacy.

Ironically, the New Jersey born, and Michigan bred young Yankees fan, grew to be a man...that would one day play for his favorite team, and become one of the greatest athletes of all-time.

Mother's Day, 2011 - Los Angeles is swept out of the playoffs, and it was Dallas that provided a glimpse into their imminent achievement.

Teamwork

The Mavericks are the NBA champions, and while a lot of people thought the series would go in a different direction...it was the total team effort that delivered the Mavs their first title in franchise history. Perhaps it was the star power and top billing of the Heat that over shadowed their stellar play...nonetheless, the 3-point shooting, rebounding, and zone defense allowed Dallas to split the first pair of games, and then travel home to capture 2 of 3...setting the stage for the105-95 win in Game 6.

Jason Terry was the catalyst for everything the Mavs were able to do in the final game, while Dirk Nowitziki, was the constant throughout the series...playing through a sinus infection, fractured finger, and ridicule. In the end, his team laughed last, leaving south Florida with the agony of defeat.

I doubt that I will ever fully comprehend Miami's lack of aggressiveness in the deciding game, however I will give full credit to the Mavericks' defense, and to the victor go the spoils.

My only concern at this moment is an NFL and NBA lockout...which of course is a horse of a different color.

Lauryn Hill - Lose Myself

Watching Game 4 on Tuesday night left me with a familiar feeling...it was as if I've seen pieces of this contest before.

Redemption

Dirk Nowitziki once again carried his team to victory, as the Mavericks edged Miami 86-83 to tie the series at 2-2. Nowitziki scored, rebounded, and defended in the 4th quarter, pouring 10 of his 21-points, which included a driving lay-up with seconds left in the period.

In Game 2, he was able to turn it on, as well as score a high percentage shot with a few ticks to go on the clock that lead to a Dallas win. Throughout the playoffs, the Mavs have made a habit of mounting great comebacks in a stunning fashion.

What stood out more in my mind, was the duress that Dirk Nowitziki was able to play under. Flashback to June 11, 1997...as Michael Jordan was ravaged by the flu, however he was able to score 38-points (15 in the last quarter) , and grab 7-rebounds, while leading the Bulls to a Game 5 NBA Finals win over the Jazz.

I not making a comparison...I was just reminded of MJ, watching Nowitizki play through a sinus infection, amongst numerous other ailments.

The history books will be rewritten by the time this matchup is said and done. Miami didn't have much of an identity late in the game, and Dallas was able to capitalize on that.

It's now a best of 3 scenario...so instead of making a prediction, I'm just going to sit back, and enjoy the next game, which I'm sure will prove to be on par with the other four.

Game 3 is vital to any best of 7 series...especially when it's knotted at 1-1. This third match is what's usually called a "swing" game, as the winner will typically go on to win it all.

Momentum

Turnovers from Dallas led to Miami's signature transition fast break offense, while the Heat set the tone early with a superb 1st half from Dwyane Wade. There were however some lapses in their team defense, which allowed the Mavericks to make a strong 3rd quarter run, eventually tying the contest at 57, with 4:36 to go in the stanza...cutting a once 13-point deficit.

Mario Chalmers has been a constant thorn in the Mavs' side, with great play on both ends of the court along with some timely 3-point shots.

There's a saying in sports that states, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Tonight, Wade was consistent throughout, with 29-points, and 11-rebounds, giving the Heat an 88-86 win, and a 2-1 advantage.

Miami did what they were supposed to do, and now the pressure is on Dallas to win at home, and get back in this matchup or face imminent elimination.

Game 4 is set for Tuesday, at 8:30pm EST.

The Mavericks evened the series at 1, in a Game 2 that the Heat would like to soon forget.
At the conclusion of the first match, I wrote that the pressure would be on Miami to tighten up the series and go up 2-0, however the only thing the road team wants to do in these situations is to steal a game, and go back to their building with the home court advantage.

Never say Never

Despite 36-points, 5-rebounds, and 6-assists from Dwyane Wade, and 20-points with 8-rebounds from LeBron James...the Mavs were able to overcome the barrage and some costly turnovers for a 95-93 victory.

This proved to be a much more exciting game, as Dirk Nowitziki provided some late game heroics scoring all his team's points down the stretch. Shawn Marion and Jason Terry added 20 and 16-points respectively to keep Dallas within striking distance as the Heat surged to a double digit lead.

The game was sealed on a left-handed Nowitziki lay-up, nonetheless...the Mavericks won the rebounding battle, and out scored Miami's bench 23-11.

Sunday is the pivotal swing game, and just like before...the onus is on Miami to prove themselves and take charge.

Jay-Z - What More Can I say

For the second time in his career, the City of Philadelphia honored the accomplishments of light heavyweight champion, Bernard Hopkins.

Native Son

Yesterday Philadelphia's mayor Michael Nutter hosted the Executioner, at the famed Rocky statue for his recent victory over Jean Pascal. With the win, he became the oldest person (age 46) in the sport to achieve a world title, surpassing George Forman who had previously held that distinction.

The champion addressed a crowd of boxing fans, and well wishers from his old neighborhood by saying, "I dealt myself a bad hand, or life dealt me a bad hand...however you want to put it, but I played my Jacks, like they were Aces..."

His career is that of which legends are told, nonetheless, it's not over until Hopkins says so, which isn't at least another 4-years away.

With his savvy and craftsmanship in the ring...the best is still yet to be seen.

Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight

The Miami Heat made the most of their return trip to the Finals, defending their home court 92-84.

Teamwork

The Heat put together a total offensive and defensive effort, as LeBron James led with 24-points, and 9-rebounds, while Dwyane Wade added 22-points, 10-rebounds, and 6-assists...but it was their second unit that surprised the Mavericks, as Mario Chalmers played 27 crucial minutes...providing Miami with 12-points off the bench.

Game 1 means everything and nothing...it sets the table, and jumpstarts the series. However it's the visiting franchise that has everything to gain and nothing to lose. All you can ask for as the road team is a split, and flight back to their place with the home court advantage.

Even with the victory, the pressure remains on the Heat to take care of business on Thursday and go to Dallas with a 2-0 lead.

Tonight the difference was LeBron James, and like the saying goes...heavy is the head that wears the crown...James answered the call, and he now stands 3-wins from a date with NBA history.

Game 2 on Thursday should be a much better game, and you can expect to witness an all out battle.

The Finals begin on Tuesday in south Florida...and this could prove to be one of the more evenly matched championships in recent years.

Tipping Point

The Mavericks and Heat have similarities...from star power, to having dynamic duos...not too mention an undying hunger to be crowned NBA champions.

Before I can give my opinion on how I see things, I'd first like to tackle the distain that people have with LeBron Raymone James. Last summer, we all know that he decided to take his talents to south beach...well it appears that things have worked out nicely for the young man, and still the general public continues to show their displeasure.

I've heard it all, but at the end of the day James honored his contract with the Cavaliers, and he felt that he had to move on to capture a title. The NBA is a business, and one of it's top employees choose to play elsewhere. No harm, no foul...so let's move on.

As for the Finals, I believe this can easily go 6 or 7 games...due to the matchup problems each team offers. Dwyane Wade will be hampered with a troublesome shoulder, however he will play. Everyone is nursing some type of injury this time of year, and while the Dirk versus LeBron chatter will begin, it's the Dallas bench that could turn the tide in the series.

I don't want to give the trophy to one team or the other...I prefer to let the teams play, and give an analysis from there. If I had to choose...I'd say, advantage Dallas because of their depth, and rebounding.

Jay-Z - Heart of the city (Ain't No Love)

Last night the Celtics outlasted the Heat 97-81, however it wasn't the score that impressed the most...it was the desire and leadership from Boston's point guard.

Hardcore

Rajon Rondo dislocated his left elbow after a collision with Dwyane Wade...and while he writhed with anguish as he was taken to the training room, no one knew what would ensue upon his return.

Rondo appeared on the Celtics bench by the end of the 3rd quarter, and he soon after began the final period on the court with his mates. I've seen games where an athlete lead their team to victory on sheer will, and Saturday was no different. Playing in pure pain...the one-armed guard worked relentlessly, when others would have folded and accepted defeat.

Today we celebrate mother's worldwide...and if Boston wins more games in this series, it will be the heroics of Rajon Rondo that will remain in the echos of basketball history.

It's the playoffs and the rule of thumb is to win, or simply go home. I understand that it's been roughly 4-months since I've written anything for this blog...which is a sign of the times. First things first, I've been super busy, and now I have a tumblr account.

Nevertheless while a few things have changed...it's good to see that a lot of teams in the NBA have a familiar look and feel.

Pursuance

Last week I was in Boston, and upon my return home, I had to decide on either taking a cab or the train from the airport...I decided on the latter and within a few minutes of taking a seat, I was in earshot of a conversation about the Lakers.

In the ensuing minutes between stops...a woman says, "Did you see Kobe crying like a little girl last night?"

I turned to her direction with a Magic Johnson like smile, and then proceeded to look through my phone, and read via twitter.

I don't understand the animosity that people have for the Lakers guard...however I do appreciate the love and fervor that fans have for their teams.

I grew up a 76ers fan, and once Charles Barkley packed his bags for Phoenix, I pledged my allegiance to the New York Knicks. The interesting thing both these teams had in common was Michael Jordan.

Jordan is one of the greatest players in the modern era, and while I loved his sneakers, and watching him fly...he ruined any chance of a championship. I couldn't fully cheer for him, however I did respect his game, and whenever I could...I would do my best to emulate his moves.

The point I'd like to make is simple...I'm not asking anyone to root for Kobe Bryant, or the Lake Show for that matter...I just think it would be a good idea to pay attention to what he is doing now, because basketball players like him are one in a million.

The Fresh Prince - Summertime

The end of the year always brings people to reflect on their lives, and while I have been thinking about numerous things this week...there is one thing that I wanted to make clear before January 1, 2011.

Showtime

If someone would have told me that the tall, lanky younger brother of Sharia Bryant would one day grow up to become one of the best basketball players in the world...I wouldn't know how to interpret that information. 16-years ago, the only thing on my mind was getting a new pair of sneakers, and hanging out with my siblings and friends.

People are usually skeptical about my friendship with the Bryant and Cox families, however it's because of Kobe, that I cheer for and support the Los Angeles Lakers. I grew up watching the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks, however when the Lakers drafted Eddie Jones from Temple in 1994, and then acquired Bryant two years later...I became a Lakers know it all. What would you do if your friend was drafted by a professional team...I'm guessing you would be a fan?

I'm all about my hometown team...I enjoy watching the Sixers, and I cheer for them always. In fact, as I write this they are playing in the Staples Center, and with 2:36 to go in the 2nd quarter they are trailing the Lake Show by 10-points, 46-36.

This is how I root for two teams...the first thing I do is assess them both realistically...meaning the Lakers are a championship caliber team, so I hope they win it all, and the 76ers are in the midst of bouncing back from a bad season last year, so I'd love for them to advance to the playoffs, and make a run.

I just wanted to set the record straight...Happy New Year!

Ghostface Killah - Mighty Healthy

A few days ago the New York Yankees made me the happiest I've been in a baseball off season in a long time. (I was so happy that I changed the avatar on my twitter page)

Home Base

I love baseball. It's the type of game that never ceases to teach me something new...be it another nuance of the game, or some historical aspect from it's vast history. The interesting thing about this sport is that in order to really get into it, someone needs to introduce you...and it was my family and friends in NYC that opened my mind to the national pastime. Since it was a New York audience to showed me the game, I naturally became a Yankees fan. I also happen to cheer for the Lakers, and Duke, so I'm just an all-around bad person.

Nevertheless, I have a few moments as a Yankees fan that I will remember forever...bar none, at the top of the list is the first time I met Derek Jeter. He was hosting a Jordan Brand event at Niketown New York a week after he dove into the Yankee Stadium crowd to record an out against the rival Red Sox. (July 1, 2004) Not only did my sister and I meet him, but I also had an opportunity to chat for a while and take a picture. I've interviewed and spoken to him since then, and he always remembers me.

Fast forward to the present day, and it was looking sketchy on whether or not the Bronx Bombers would resign him. I don't care what his numbers were last season, or that he is getting older...at the end of the day Derek Jeter is a Yankee, now, forever, and always.

I was elated to see that both sides came to a 3-year incentive based deal over the weekend.

Now that Jeter and the Sandman have been retained, the team is focused on getting the lefty Cliff Lee. If he signs anywhere else, I will be extremely surprised...and speaking of surprises, Jayson Werth made headlines signing a stunning deal with the Nationals...good luck with that...and just know that Phillies fans might boo you a few times next year since you stayed within the division...and you don't have to take my word for it, just call Donovan McNabb.

I haven't been myself lately...anyone that knows me...understands exactly what I mean, on paper I'm sure I look great...I'm a college graduate with job, and bright future. However I haven't been up to par...best way I can explain it...I'm starting to mirror a certain team in South Florida.

Goodfellas

I think Jay-Z said it best, when he stated..."it was all good just a week ago"...now things haven't spiraled to the point of no return, but if you check your twitter time line, or read the your ESPN app regularly, then you would think the Miami Heat had lost their glass slipper, and turned into a pumpkin at midnight.

Currently they are playing less than advertised with 15 games in the books (8 wins, 7 losses), however when a team like this is assembled in the free agency fashion it was...you need time for it to coagulate.

Every great team has a superstar or two (Lakers), and the Heat have that...what they lack is the experience of playing together, front court defense, and health. In these times of 24-hour instant access, I believe that the average, fly-by-night, bandwagon, fan doesn't have the patience to wait for DWade and company to fulfill the championship promises.

Miami is stuck in neutral, and with 67-games to go...things can change for the better...the Heat's biggest concern is not when they turn things around...it's the more established teams in the East, like Orlando, and Boston.

This is not the year LeBron makes good on his quest for the title...that day is still a little further down the road. Until that time comes, games like James' return to Cleveland will have to do for highlights, and headlines of this season.

Have faith everyone, Rome wasn't built in a day.

The NBA season is very young, and it will be a few months before things start to take shape...however I firmly believe that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Rage against the machine

The Miami Heat, Rajon Rondo, Blake Griffin, Kevin Garnett, and NBA 2K11 have attracted headlines and highlights near and far, nevertheless it's the Los Angeles Lakers that have been flying under the radar with the league's best record at 7-0.

On opening night, a friend of mine tweeted that he didn't see the passion and fire in Kobe's eyes, and that the Lakers reign will come to an end this year. I sent a friendly response to disagree with him, and set the record straight. I've known Kobe Bean for several years, and he is one of the most competitive persons I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. The team's mission is to win the NBA Championship, and it's Bryant that sets the tone.

Last Saturday my friend Vic, a writer for the Associated Press, texted me saying "I told Kobe that you said what's up..." My response was: "Kobe is family, and thank you...what did you say?" At which Vic responded, "I saw him right before the media crowded around, and I said hey Kobe, Anthony Gilbert says what's up...he smiled and said that's what's up!"

It's been a while since I've seen him, so thank you Vic for playing the messenger, and to Kobe...I'll see you next month...in the meantime...keep up the good work, and I'll be sure to support.

This is my favorite time of the year because it usually means that the Yankees are in the World Series.

Brand New

April and October are the best months for baseball because they signify both the beginning and the end. The Yanks will not play to defend their '09 crown, and part of me can appreciate that nothing is guaranteed in life, and the Bronx Bombers can begin preparing now for next year.

As for the Philadelphia Phillies...they lost too, so as far as I'm concerned...it's officially basketball season. I expect the Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic, and Boston Celtics to play and battle on a higher than average level...while the Miami Heat have endless potential that will make this first season watching them one to remember.

I want to wish the San Francisco Giants, and Texas Rangers all the best in the fall classic, however when Game 1 begins on Wednesday...I plan to watch the 76ers play against the Heat.

Baseball season ended a little early for me, however the spring will be here before you know it, and all will be well with the world again.

The NBA saga however...continues on October 26th.

It's October and while that means a lot of things to many people...for me it's the month when a World Series champion is crowned. Yesterday I tweeted the following: "Just so I don't look like I jumped on the bandwagon, the @Phillies will win the World Series, and go @Yankees..."

I'm from the City of Brotherly Love...Philadelphia for those who don't know. And while I cheer for the Eagles with fervor, it's my affection for the New York Yankees that confuses everyone. New York City is a place like none other, and yes I lived there for a long time, and one of the things I picked up over the years is a love for baseball. I could never cheer for the Mets, since I'm a Philly native...I knew that much, so I began watching that pinstriped team in the south Bronx.

When the Yankees didn't make the playoffs in 2008, it opened the door for my hometown Phillies to win and bring our championship starved town a winner. I was happy for the Phils in '07, and a year later they did what many thought was impossible...and that made me even happier!

I attend a number of Phillies games because I love baseball, and instead of driving to NYC or Baltimore for the Bronx Bombers, I take a quick trip to South Philly. So here is my moment of honesty...I actually like the Phillies, however the Yankees are my team. I know it makes zero sense, and this post is like covering myself with a security blanket.

Can the Phillies win it all...yes they can. They have 3 Aces in Halladay, Hamels, and Oswalt, and they have an American League style of play with Ryan Howard, Rollins, Utley, Werth, and Ruiz. Pitching is the key to any pennant and World Series...so if the Phils bullpen can hold and save games, it'll be a red October in Philadelphia.

Baseball is tricky and anything can happen, so I wanted to write this ahead of the first game to explain my loyalty to the team everyone loves to hate.

It's been quite a while since I have written anything...let alone done something for myself...as it's been a busy summer. Nevertheless, I had an idea last week to drive to Baltimore for the Orioles/Yankees weekend matchup.

I didn't make the trip, and as I write this entry...I wish I did.

CC Sabathia entered last night's game with a 19-6 record...seeking the MLB's first 20 game winner since Yankee hurler Mike Mussina did it in '08. The Bronx Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 1st inning lead, and Sabathia never looked back, leading the Yanks to a 11-3 victory, for his first 20 win season.

Throughout his career he's been consistent, from the Cy Young award, to the World Series ring...CC is a proven winner.

With October baseball on the horizon, both the Yankees and Phillies look as if they are on a course for a World Series rematch...in the meantime they will be busy vying for their division with the Yankees hosting the Rays this week, and the Phillies will entertain the Braves.

This is the time when baseball heats up, and every pitch counts more than ever...there are 2 weeks left in the regular season, and anything can happen...see you in October.

Four years ago I was asked to lead a French movie production company (360 Creative) through the historic and iconic basketball playgrounds of Philadelphia...and after a brief meeting, my role changed from that of Lewis and Clark, to Denzel Washington.

Last Friday the film debuted at the Apollo Theater in Harlem...and the rest is history.

It's been a while since that encounter, and it seems like yesterday when I met Thibaut and Flore on 96th and Amsterdam in New York City...yet it was a meeting that forever sealed the dreams I had of being on television from my youth. The best part of my experience in making the movie, and watching it was that a lot of my friends made some cameo appearances...you know who you are...we did it!

I've have been blessed throughout my career, and this was another example of how I was able to take my passion of TV/film and combine it with the unique affinity that I have with sneakers. Life is both difficult, and good!

Last week there were faint reports that a former NBA player was missing, as it was first pointed out to me by Michael Tillery of The Starting Five.

Sadness

Lorenzen Wright was found dead outside of Memphis, TN, 10 days after he was reported missing. When I heard the news I had to sit and reflect for a minute as my mind was racing with numerous thoughts. As a collegian I joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and one of the things that always delighted me was that there were several NBA players that were also members, and we have all become friends. During my internship with the New York Knicks, Allan Houston would always look out for me, and when I met Oscar Robertson during an All-Star game I was humbled at how he embraced me as a brother.

Ren as he was known was no different, always looking to catch up before and after games...sometimes we spoke about basketball, other times we spoke at length about our college days and life.

The news did not specify what happened to Wright, however I always knew him to be a standup guy, that took full advantage of his basketball skill set...making a great career from the game he loved.

The New York Yankees lost two mainstays recently, as public address announcer Bob Sheppard and owner George Steinbrenner died a few days apart from one another.

I grew up a Yankees fan, and throughout the years I could always count on a few things once I got off the 4 Train at 161st Street. For starters Yankee Stadium would greet me with all her glory, and once inside...Sheppard's voice would boom with poetic grace, Derek Jeter would play in his spectacular All-Star fashion, and The Boss was at the helm.

Today, the old Yankee Stadium is gone, and Sheppard and The Boss have passed...however Jeter is there as the Captain...steering the team toward a new chapter.

In 2001, I wanted nothing more than a World Series victory due to the tragic events in September, and while the Yankees fell to the Diamond Backs in 7-games...it was just what New York City needed to assist with the healing process. Now with the loss of some very important persons...another run at the title would do both the organization and city some good.

LeBron James shook up the sports world last week when he announced that he was taking his talents to South Beach. Since then the media and and general public have been giving him the Kobe treatment.

LeBron James is a professional athlete and he has done what was best for him and his family. My first job upon my graduation from Temple University was with the National Basketball Association...when I was laid off due to an economic downturn...my heart was in pain, and I felt betrayed, however at the end of the day it was a business move.

When I look at the circumstances of James' decision...the similarities are familiar. I can understand the way people felt when he choose not to return to Cleveland, because whenever emotions are involved...the vision can become cloudy...yet this wasn't about the fans, or loyalty to his adopted home, it was strictly business. If the Cavs would have traded him to another team last February, it would have been merely the way things are done in professional sports. So there shouldn't be any hoopla when the athlete takes the reigns for once.

The NBA rookies of 2003 are as heralded as the '84, and '96 classes, so with James, Wade, and Bosh on the same squad...it's Xbox come true. Imagine Bryant, Nash, and Ray Allen, or Jordan, Barkley, and Olajuwon together against the league...the possibilities would be endless.

I see nothing wrong with this move to Florida. When A-Rod won the AL MVP award with the Rangers...he was a great player with tons of individual awards, but what truly burned his competitive fire was the quest for a World Series ring, which he captured last October. He is currently about to reach the 600 home run milestone, and now as a champion he can revel in the accolades. It has nothing to do with the Yankees being Derek Jeter's team...it has everything to do with the reason why all athletes play.

Only time will tell if this new star alignment will earn multiple championships...right now as things are, the Celtics, Magic, Thunder, and Lakers can prove to be a thorn in Miami's side, but until next June arrives, we'll all just have to watch and wait.

There is nothing new under the sun...so when the hysteria of the NBA's free agency period reached a boiling point last Thursday, I didn't speculate on what would happen.

Internationally Known

For every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction, according to Sir Isaac Newton and his laws of motion...this being the case, the announcement or shall I say the decision tomorrow evening from Lebron James will not only get a worldwide reaction...it will undoubtedly change the state of professional basketball.

33-years ago Dr. J made the switch from the ABA to the NBA, earlier this decade MJ donned a Wizards uniform, and more recently Kobe flirted with the possibility of playing for the Clippers, and Bulls. In each scenario the Earth continued to turn...as it will most certainly be business as usual tomorrow...yet in still with each high profile case, it becomes big news throughout the industry and pop culture.

The question is will LBJ leave or will he seek greener pastures in another city? Personally I would love for him to finish his career in Cleveland, however James must do what's best for his family and career. As a sports fan, there is a lot to be said about a person that plays their entire career with one team (Derek Jeter)...yet in still this is life and as much as we try to control it...opportunities arise, and things change like the seasons.

LeBron James will play well in any uniform...the bottom line revolves around championships, and money. What I find most intriguing about this, is the fact that the press conference is being held in Connecticut, and James has been tweeting today with random facts...I don't get it, however by this time tomorrow, it should all make sense.

It's been slightly over a year since the Lakers defeated the Magic for the title...but before we take a trip down memory lane...it was merely a few weeks ago, when they did the impossible and repeated as champions.

Rivalry

Ron Artest, and Derek Fisher stepped up in the final two wins... nevertheless, Kobe Bryant received all the credit. However this was the best of one team in the Lakers, against the fire power of another...the rival Celtics. Anytime a best of 7-series goes the distance, the teams are evenly matched and it's the little things that go a long way. For example Kobe had a terrible shooting night in the finale, however he still managed to grab 15 rebounds...and Sasha Vujacic knocked down 2 critical free-throws down the stretch to help seal the victory.

Now that both teams have beaten one another for all the marbles in the last 2-years...it is safe to say that the heated rivalry from previous decades are back...which is a great thing for the fans and the overall popularity of the league.

What I didn't appreciate is how it seemed everyone cheered for the C's and they weren't even Boston fans. Much respect to my friend Ariana, who is legit and bleeds green...nevertheless, now that the season is over, it's time for the rookies to make a name for themselves, and for free agency to make everything topsy turvy.

It's July, and I can hardly wait for next season to begin.

The Lakers have extended the NBA Finals to a Game 7...and the rest will be history come Thursday evening.

Tomorrow Never Dies

The Lake Show earned an 89 - 67 victory over the Celtics Tuesday night in LA, and they did it playing as a team. In the last two losses, the Lakers failed to hustle, fight, and rebound...nevertheless everything changed in Game 6.

The Celtics lost their starting center Kendrick Perkins to a knee injury, and they succumbed to the Lakers defense and grit.

As with any win or go home situation, anything can happen...so both teams will have to play with heart, and intelligence. The stakes are at their highest, and with the Staples Center playing host...the home court advantage could prove positive for LA. Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett will not go quietly into the night, as this upcoming matchup can easily go either way.

Before the Finals began, I wrote that both teams are evenly matched...and that this series will go the distance. Will Kobe stop at nothing for his 5th championship ring, or will the C's bounce back, and win on the road?

The team that rebounds and defends walks into the history books, while the other will vow for revenge just as the Lakers did in '08.

The Boston Celtics stand one game away from their second championship in 3-years. They will have 2 chances this week to capture the crown, however there is one obstacle in their way...

Final Destination

The NBA Finals began in the City of Angeles with each team winning 1-game apiece and once the series shifted to Boston...things got tricky for the Lake Show. In Game 4 it was the second unit of the Celtics that proved to be too much, and for Game 5, I honestly believe the C's wanted to win that much more, with superb play down the stretch from Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Rajon Rondo.

Game 6 and a potential 7th will be played in LA, and if Ron Artest, and Lamar Odom provide Kobe Bryant with a better effort on both ends of the floor, then it's game over for Boston.

Bryant proved what he can do, however the Celtics have played a much better team game as of late, so with the fate of the season on the line, I expect the Lakers to win.

Can Kobe Bean lead his team through sheer will and desire? Can the Celtics close it out and raise another championship banner...the answer to those mysteries are in the steady hands of number 24. The real question is, who will show up to play with Kobe Bryant...the reining champs, or the other squad that seemed to give up in two winnable games in the TD Bank North Garden...

At this point in the year the game is all about executing, and having the determination to accomplish the goal.

Actions speak louder than words, and I believe we will see a very good Lakers team in Game 6, poised to force a 7th and deciding game.

From there...anything can happen...winner takes all.

Game 1 of the NBA Finals tips off tonight in the City of Angels...and while this matchup will go into the history books as the most storied rivalry in basketball...I feel there is no clear favorite.

No Fear

I was watching an NBA Finals preview on ESPN Wednesday, and everyone on the show picked the Boston Celtics to win the series in 6 games...and while agree that the C's are a very tough team, I just don't see one team over the other. Tonight's game will not give me enough information on either franchise, so I'll reserve my full opinion until after Game 3 in the TD Banknorth Garden.

This is the Finals that both teams wanted. With bragging rights and basketball history on the line, my expectations are few...I understand that everyone on the floor has the experience, heart, and savvy to win.

The big story right now is Derek Fisher and Rajon Rondo, however the Lakers have had to deal with really good point guards throughout the playoffs, so the bigger story is team defense which the Lake Show lacked in their '08 Finals loss.

This series goes the distance, and we as fans will be there for a memorable ride. These teams are even, and it's the team that does the little things and pays attention to detail that will emerge victorious.

The Celtics have put themselves in a position to raise championship banner number 18...and while it didn't seem like it was going to happen during the season...they have quietly made a run unlike no other.

Not now, but right now

Before the 2009-10 NBA campaign, I wrote a piece on how the Lakers and Celtics would meet again for the title. My assumption could prove accurate in the next week, as the C's look to wrap up the series tonight in Orlando. On Monday I met with Hall of Fame Coach John Chaney, and as our conversation shifted to the league...he expressed that Rajon Rondo is a scoring first, pass second point guard, and because of that fact the Celtics will not win it all with him at the helm.

I'm not sure what to think...I feel that Rondo is doing a terrific job. Coach Chaney wants him to pass to Ray Allen more, and drive to the basket less. (Coach says Ray has the best jump shot in the league, while Kobe Bryant is the best overall player) The Orlando Magic have struggled more within themselves, than from any defensive pressure, and as they play Game 5, 8:30PM EST...they are playing for tomorrow, while the C's once again find themselves with nothing to lose.

If they win, mission accomplished...if they fail, then they still have two more opportunities to win one game...which makes the Boston Celtics a very dangerous team.

The Celtics have a possibility of 2-games to advance into the Eastern Conference Finals, while the Cavaliers are merely taking it one game at a time...

Win or go home

The Boston/Cleveland series is a unique mix of playoff basketball and Catch 22 politics. If the Cavs win, then that's exactly what they were melded together to do...however if Celtics emerge victorious, then it will be a total failure by LeBron and the James gang.

I usually watch the games while I surf on Twitter. By the intermission of Game 5...fans, and naysayers formed a united front in bashing LeBron James. I content on texting my friend Ariana the score after each quarter (she's a Celtics fan), nevertheless it was interesting to see...how fickle people are.

In my opinion the Cavs played poorly, yet the other side of that coin proves how well the C's competed, and just how good they are. The real story is, the maturation of Rajon Rondo, and a healthy all-star supporting cast. When Boston won their 17th championship in '08, Rondo was a decent guard playing with a veteran laden core, now he is a veteran point guard leading his peers.

Sometimes things fall apart, while other times everything works together accordingly...in the case of the very storied Boston Celtics, their plan has been working, and the secret ingredient of Rondo is no longer a mystery based on potential...he's an integral cog toward another title.

So will the Celtics win in 6, or do they try again? If this goes the distance, then it's anybody's game. If the Cavs fail, it's because they either struggled way too much, or they just didn't have enough to get it done...regardless of those facts the better team always wins.

Boston has everything to gain, and nothing to lose.

The LA/Utah series had a change of venue, as the Energy Solutions Arena played host to the Lake Show last night...in a game to remember.

Strictly Business

With 35-points and a calm under pressure cool...Kobe Bryant gave the Jazz, the blues. The best part about it...the Lakers did it as a team with double digit scoring from Fisher, Artest, and Pau Gasol.

Yes it was a close game, and yes the Lake Show were a few nano seconds from losing on two missed Jazz attempts before the buzzer, however the better team won. Now that LA holds a commanding 3-0 lead, everything else about this matchup is irrelevant because the end is near for the Utah Jazz.

The best part of the game for me wasn't the late game heroics and drama, it was the sight of Kobe's parents cheering and supporting their son. It brings back memories of them at his games in high school, or their daughter's matches in college.

The Bryant family is a tight knit clan...much like the Cosby Show, or Run's House, and while Kobe gets his name Bean and basketball acumen from his father, it's his mother...Ms. Pam that encouraged his will power, and tenacity. In life there is always going to be someone better, more attractive, smarter, taller, bigger, etc...however what can separate or level the playing field is the hard work, or determination that you give or have.

In the curious case of Kobe Bryant, not only is he one of the best players in the sport, he just so happens to be mentally stronger, and tougher than everyone as well...so in honor of this Mother's Day, I'd like to note that he is living his dream of becoming a professional athlete, and it was his mom's example, and teaching that has made the NBA champion that you see today.

The Lakers are currently matched up with the Jazz...and while that may invoke a familiar playoff tune...it's the presence of Joe and Pam Bryant that make me think back to when I first met them at their daughter's volleyball game.

Circle of Trust

One of the strongest bonds on the planet is that of a family...be it humankind or otherwise, the family structure is very important to who we become later in life. Its not unusual to see an athlete's mother, or father in an arena, however when I saw Kobe's parents at the recent games in LA...it made me think of the days that are now so far gone. I met Kobe when we were teens, growing up in this crazy city, however what I admired most about the kid with the ubiquitous basketball was his close knit family. His mother and father's attendance isn't a Hollywood publicity stunt, as they have been traveling to their children's games since way before I can remember.

I don't have much to say about the series, because it has yet to become newsworthy...as the Lake Show have capitalized on the smaller, short handed Jazz. Playing in Utah is difficult, nevertheless, I expect more of the same, as the Lakers front court is beaming with height, and versatility...spelling disaster for the Western Conference.

Last year LeBron James won his first league MVP, and this year the celebration had a familiar ring to it, with the reigning King adding another trophy to his basketball resume.

Stepping Stone

The media have spoken...as it is evident that the best player in the league is LeBron R. James, however if you speak with him, he'll tell you that he couldn't have accomplished winning back to back MVP's without his team, and family. He'll also mention that he would like to win as many NBA titles as possible...so much so that it literally drives him to play no matter the situation.

Coincidentally he is playing with an elbow injury that could potentially alter his championship dreams. The Cavs/Celtics series is a match up of really good, veteran laden teams, and while LeBron's elbow adds a new wrinkle, I expect this one to go the 7-game distance. That's just my opinion, because I feel that the Celtics are a much better team than they get credit for. Nevertheless, this story is about the MVP...as James is the current face of the NBA, now and for years to come. In the past I would often say that the league is in good hands once Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and Tim Duncan retire, however the changing of the guard happened a lot sooner than I thought...the change is very good.

LeBron is a stand up guy, and has always treated me with respect. I look forward to watching his success and legend build...and as the questions arise, of will he stay in Cleveland or go...I understand that basketball is a business and he will do whatever is best for him, his family, and brand.

Basketball is an unfair game. It's the type of contest that even when you give your best effort...you still lose. Nothing in this league happens overnight, so as the Lakers continue to play on, their first round opponent will be back next season in full force.

Degree of difficulty

Kobe Bryant has endured through an extremely rough season, and while he presses on through all the injuries, I find it interesting to hear that people believe his career is over. I don't feed into who is better, or the best...basketball on this level is a business and the bottom line is about winning. Nevertheless he finished with 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Lake Show are the reigning champions and if their fearless leader has anything to do with it, they will capture this year's crown. Bryant is sure to show and prove, and when Russell Westbrook needed a hand in his face, Kobe Bean expressed interest in applying the necessary pressure.

There are two things I learned from the Lakers/Thunder series:

The OKC Thunder have no fear, what they lacked in this round was depth in the front court, and playoff experience. They will add to their roster this summer, and next year every team needs to be on alert.
The Lakers have all the tools to repeat, however they do not always play to their strength. As they move forward, I believe they will make the necessary tweaks to return to their superior form.

Today Tyreke Evans was awarded the 2009-10 Rookie of the Year trophy. I’ve been covering his games for a few years, and he has matured both as a person and point guard.

Success

When you work hard for something your entire life, it becomes easier over time. The progression is natural like a child growing into adulthood. Earlier this season it looked as if Brandon Jennings would walk away with the accolades, and down the stretch Stephen Curry looked as if he would carry the honor, however it was Evans that has been constant throughout.

In speaking with my friend Devin via twitter, I was reminded that this is an individual prize, and while the Milwaukee Bucks have the better record, and now everyone knows to fear the deer...the ultimate team recognition is a championship.

I interviewed Hugo after a Wizards game, and upon leaving the visitor’s locker room, I asked Caron Butler about Tyreke. He simply explained, “man, we played against the Rookie of the Year tonight...no question...”

With Blake Griffin returning for the 2010-11 campaign along with this summer’s upcoming draft class, featuring Wall, and Turner...things could be just as interesting or better in the coming months.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have evened the series against the Lake Show at 2 games apiece. Everyone loves an underdog, however Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and company are far from overachievers.

Change

The NBA Playoffs are in full swing, with intensity, suspense, and enough highlights to last a lifetime, however there is one team that everyone counted out before they started playing...the OKC Thunder. The main reasons why I believe they have been ignored is because of their small market and they don't have a lot of fanfare or recognition...the other thing that hindered the Thunder was that they are matched up against the reigning champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Last night from the start Oklahoma City took the Lakers out of their comfort zone. Defensively they have been able to disrupt shot selection around the basket with blocks are good rotation, and offensively they have attacked the Laker guards with a combination of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden. Durant is a 7'0" guard causing match up problems across the board and Westbrook, and Harden have found their stride and jump shots.

The series is even and now returns to the city of angels, so the pressure is on both teams to show and prove. The home teams have won all the games, so the first visiting team to win on the road will naturally win and move on to the next round.

A lot has been made about the Lakers' so-called fall from grace, and the tremendous heart and effort of the upstart Thunder.

There is nothing I can write to determine the outcome, so stay tuned for Game 5...it's one game at a time.

As a child, whenever I had a bad day, I'd go to the park and shoot hoops until I felt better. Now as an adult...I still play make those lonely trips to the playground, however...sometimes I'll run a few miles, or even write.

Habitual

The NBA playoffs officially kicked off last weekend...with the Cavs, and Magic playing exactly as expected, while the Trailblazers continued to amaze and win despite their injuries. Nonetheless, it was the Los Angeles Lakers that had all eyes on them. The Lake Show are the rock stars of the league, and reigning champs or not, the light always shines brightest in the city of angels.

After defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 87-79, everyone questioned the Lakers play and poor shooting from Kobe. For some reason a lot of people felt compelled to call and text me...my response is simply this...it's the playoffs and all wins are good wins.

I expect Los Angeles to win the series, and move on to the second round. The Thunder will benefit greatly from their playoff experience, and next year they will be better, stronger, and faster...until then...keep your eyes on Orlando, Cleveland, and the Lake Show, because things are about to get exciting.

It's a marathon, not a sprint...first team to 16 wins, captures the crown.

Earlier this season the Stanford Cardinals squared off against the UConn Huskies as the squad from Palo Alto jumped to a halftime lead, before losing to the defending champions. Last night they battled for the National Championship, and the game was slightly reminiscent of the first.

Deja Vu

UConn trailed 20-12 Tuesday night, and while the audience may have had their doubts...I believe that both teams knew things would change. Maya Moore scored 11 points during a UConn 17-2 run that sparked the beginning of the 2nd half, as the Cardinals lost another close game to the best team in college basketball 53-47.

The women of UConn have a 78-0 record since they began play last season, and although Player of the Year Tina Charles is moving on to the professional ranks, they will find peace in knowing that Maya Moore and Caroline Doty will be back for another run in 2011.

In defense of Stanford, their senior leader Jayne Appel entered the game with an injury to her ankle and was ineffective throughout the contest. Basketball like life isn't fair, and in UConn's case it was just a matter of time before Moore erupted with a scoring flurry. She later explained that she had "no fear".

Losing Charles to graduation will be a big loss, however it seems that this team continues to play tough, and with time...get better.

Last year UNC won the national title and all was well and good again in college basketball...tonight their ACC rival captured the crown, and the mood around the nation is bittersweet.

Everybody Hates Duke

I'm not going to write a recap of the NCAA tournament, or the championship game for that matter, however I will say that this has been one of the best March Madness brackets in years...and while the Cinderella Butler University didn't win...it still had a storybook ending.

Two summers ago I ventured to LaSalle University to watch Michael Beasley workout prior to the 2008 NBA Draft. Beasley wasn't there when I arrived, however there were a few familiar faces including Hakim Warrick, Mardy Collins, Wayne Ellington, Gerald Henderson Jr., Kyle Lowry, and Nolan Smith. Anyone that knows me personally will laugh at what I'm about to tell you...after watching several pickup games and drills I walked over to Smith and introduced myself. He was very down to Earth, and after accepting some friendly advice on how he could improve his game...I kindly asked him why he was wearing Pro Model adidas?

He gave me a puzzled look, as to say what does that have to do with anything...and I informed young Nolan that he attends an Elite Nike Basketball school and that he should wear his Nike tennis shoes with pride.

It was a typical me moment, but what I didn't tell him was that as a child I cheered for his dad when he played for my hometown 76ers. Tonight I thought about Derek Smith, as his son won college basketball's ultimate crown. 30-years ago Derek won it all with Louisville, and enjoyed a solid career in the NBA...in August 1996 he died from a massive heart attack leaving his family and young son with a huge void.

Basketball is an interesting sport that mirrors life...I continue to use it to this day as a catharsis, and if anyone has found solace on the court...it is Nolan Smith.

Everyone loves to hate Duke, however if they understood some of the stories within the bigger picture...I would hope they would be more caring. Butler was the quintessential underdog, however unbeknownst to the rest of the world...Duke was too.

The two premier players in the league matched up against conference foes today, and walked away with a new number in the loss column.

Endurance

The Celtics defeated the Cavaliers, and the Spurs traveled to the Staples Center and outplayed the Lakers. Since the games ended a few hours ago...everyone is up in arms about the losses, however in the grand scheme of things it means nothing. Of course any team would like to continue winning as they head into the playoffs, however with so few games remaining in the regular season...this is a time to make the necessary adjustments, and get a few key players some rest before the games begin to really count.

I received a text from my homeboy Vince during the Lakers game, and he informed me how much they underachieve as a team, and that the Celtics are going to win the title. Let's just say that I don't agree with him, however if the Lake Show do in fact play less then their potential, then I'm curious to see how they perform once Bynum returns from injury, and the team is back at full staff.

I don't have all the answers and the playoffs are right around the corner...nevertheless I have to give respect to Los Angeles as the reigning champs, and in the Eastern Conference...I feel that it is going to be either Orlando or Cleveland. Both teams are evenly matched, with the Magic having an advantage at the guard and center positions, and the Cavs have LeBron James...enough said!

The season is a marathon not a sprint...while the playoffs are win or go home.

The Nets have endured a season to remember...be it good or bad, this is one they will not soon forget.

Beginning to the End

Prior to this week many people wondered if the Nets would succumb to the pressures of failure, or make a decent run, and string together a few wins...well as of Monday, March 29th...the could of doubt would dissipate after a 90-84 win over the visiting Spurs.

The victory ensured that the franchise would finish the year with no less than 10 wins...one more than the lowly 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers historically had a 9-73 record.

The question being asked now is where do they go from here...and I've covered a few Nets games this year...as they have some legit pieces that will return them back to respectability.

Like I always say and firmly believe...it's not how you start...it's how you finish.

A month ago my friend Vince sent me a text that read: Duke is going to win it all. And while I didn't totally scoff at his message...I had a second thought or two on the matter.

Fantastic Four

Coach K always talks about how the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back...and if there is one thing you can say about the Blue Devils...you can express without hesitation that they play together as team. Their last two games are proof positive that they can play with the best of them, after defeating Purdue, and Baylor...no easy task by any means.

This has been one of the best NCAA tournaments in recent years. It was as unpredictable as it was entertaining, and now that West Virginia, Butler, Michigan State, and Duke have advanced...it seems that anything can happen...mainly because it already has.

Nonetheless the ride is far from over...and if the world had it's say, the Dookies would have lost in the first round. I don't understand why EVERYONE despises Duke...they get the Yankees, Cowboys, and Lakers treatment. That's what happens when you are a proven winner, however Michigan State is also an elite program, winning the national championship twice, along with numerous trips to the Final Four within the the past ten years...but they don't receive the distain that Duke does.

West Virginia is the only team I have left in my bracket after watching Kansas, Kentucky, and Villanova fall by the wayside. It's really good for college basketball to see these schools as the last ones standing. On one end there is the familiarity and experience with Tom Izzo leading the Spartans, and then Duke making the return trip after several years on the outside looking in. On the opposite side of that spectrum is Butler making their first ever trip to the Final Four, and West Virginia is back for the first time since Jerry West led them in 1959...his son Jonnie ironically is a guard on the current team.

The possibilities are endless, however I'm going to stick to my Big East pick West Virginia, and just pray that Duke doesn't make me look too bad this weekend.

Nobody remembers who came in second place...so when you talk about the 2009 NBA Finals, the Orlando Magic have become can afterthought.

Definition

If the season ended today, many people would pencil in the Lakers and Cavaliers in a highly anticipated Kobe versus LeBron, Nike Most Valuable Puppets championship...however basketball like everything else in life has no guarantee.

The Magic with a pillar in Dwight Howard and floor general in Jameer Nelson have the components to make return trip to the promise land. Atlanta, Boston, and Cleveland are playing well, and because of that fact, the reining conference champions are left without their proper respect.

I asked a few of the Magic players what their thoughts were on the topic:

AXG: What's the state of this team?

Dwight Howard: It's a different team from last year for one...and now we're starting to gel together, so the biggest difference from last year's team is that last year we had all been together for a long time so we had great chemistry, and now we're just trying to learn to play with each other.

AXG: Where is the love and respect for this team?

Dwight Howard: We are still the only people who believe in us. There are still people that think we won't get as far as we did last year, but our main concern is finishing out the regular season strong without any injuries. I don't think they respect us...we still have to get that respect from people. We are the defending Eastern Conference champs and you let everybody else tell it...it's like we didn't even win it. We understand that, we are just going to continue to work on our game, and come playoff time we're going to be ready.

AXG: Jameer...you and Dwight sat and watched the Lakers celebrate the championship last year...can you speak on that?

Jameer Nelson: I did it with him...he wanted me to stay out there to soak it in...because you don't want anyone to celebrate on your home court, and we don't want that feeling anymore. What we did was try to soak it in, and use that as motivation.

AXG: How will that help your team as you make this run into the playoffs?

Jameer Nelson: Well we know the feeling...and we don't want that again, so like I told the guys earlier...each time we step on the court, it's a different experience and it prepares you for another game, and another situation similar to it.

AXG: Can you explain your last meeting against the Lakers, and Kobe Bryant specifically?

Matt Barnes: With great players like that you have to make them work. I think a lot of attention came to it because it was the Lakers and they [Magic] played each other in the Finals last year. I just thought it was a physical game...back and forth and the fact that it was Kobe and someone was standing up to him...everyone made a big deal about it, but you have to really make someone like him work. He's the greatest player in the world and you can't let him have the mental advantage over you as well. So I tried to stay in it and make him take as many shots as possible to get his points.

AXG: What do you bring to this team?

Matt Barnes: I'm trying to change the mentality around here. You know word on the street and around the league was that Orlando was soft, and it's nothing that one person is going to change, I think it's a team overhaul and mentality that you're not just going to come into our house and push us around. I think the team has taken to that and that's a good thing to roll with.

One announcement yesterday from the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, and the landscape of professional golf changed...and for good reason.

Full Circle

I began watching golf since Tiger Woods turned pro, and he has taken his peers and fans alike on a historic ride of greatness. Eldridge will make his return at the Masters, which takes place April 8-11. It's going to be really good to see him back on the course at the Augusta National Golf Club no less, as he makes an attempt to do what he does best in winning championships.

The Masters are going to be a media circus following his every move, because of what he and his family are enduring personally...however I feel that this man's private matters should be handled between he and his wife, not in the court of public opinion. Unfortunately life doesn't work that way in this business. It's not fair...he didn't cheat the sport, and as a sports writer that is all I feel I should comment on.

We all have our transgressions, so who am I to throw stones from a glass house? I believe Woods will return, and compete well enough to win, and in a game such as golf...that's all you can ask.

There is nothing new under the sun, so don't be surprised when he's wearing a red shirt with another green blazer.

As a collegian one of the things I always looked forward to outside my broadcast television classes...was the NCAA tournament.

Madness

Temple University always had great basketball teams...in fact it was the leadership of Coach Chaney...and play of the Eddie Jones/Aaron McKie tandem that attracted me to enroll. Well...that is after my dream of attending UCLA didn't come to fruition, however that's another story...nevertheless I'm happy to say that things haven't changed much on North Broad Street, as the Owls have been ranked throughout the season, and well on their way back to the tournament.

My allegiance is to TU, and then everyone else...one of my favorites outside the alma mater is Villanova, and even though they have struggled recently, I know they will be just fine because the Big East is by far the best conference in the nation.

Everyone talks of the SEC with Kentucky, the Big 12 and Kansas, or the ACC with Duke...however the Big East has several schools that have superior teams with experience, and talent at numerous positions. With their victory over Georgetown, hopefully the world will understand how good West Virginia is, and the Pitt Panthers are another team that plays exceptionally well without the recognition.

I'm not going to make any predictions, however when you are filling out your brackets, remember the Temple Owls, and their neighbors in the Big East.

The Mavericks defeated the hapless Nets 96-87...last night for their 45th win on the year and 13th in a row.

Major Figures

There is a saying that states: slow and steady wins the race, and if that is the case then the Dallas Mavericks are on pace to go deep into the upcoming playoffs. Since the trade for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, and DeShawn Stevenson...this squad has quietly gotten better, stronger, and faster.

Its never my practice to award a team or predict their future, however the Mavs are a legit threat to win it all. This group is better than the 2006 team that lost in the Finals to Miami...the reason is they are an experienced group of veterans featuring Jason Kidd, and Dirk Nowitzki, as they boast a solid bench with depth at numerous positions.

With injuries to Jason Terry, and Jose Juan Barea...others have stepped up like rookie Rodrigue Beaubois who is an all around talent...playing well at both ends of the floor.

Much has been made about Caron Butler and his preference to chew on McDonald's straws during games...however the bigger story is how the Mavs continue to win, putting the league's best teams on high alert.

There is a new kid on the block and if they are not given respect...they will gladly take it...and the win!

The WNBA franchise Tulsa Shock, have announced today the signing of Marion Jones, after she worked out for the team last Saturday.

2nd Childhood

Basketball is a sport that has opened many doors beyond anything I could ever envision...so when the Shock signed Jones, it made perfect sense, as I'm sure the game brings her the same satisfaction that I receive from it. Marion Jones was drafted in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury in 2003, but she never played.

She has been associated with controversy and negativity for taking performance enhancing substances, and while I understand to an extent the backlash...she admitted her wrong doing, served time in prison and has since moved forward with her life.

Basketball was her first love, as she helped led UNC to at 33-2 record, and the NCAA national championship as a freshman, so I find it refreshing that she's come full circle, getting back to her roots. She recently had her third child, however I believe Marion is up for this new challenge. I'm not sure how long she will play...but its really good to see her back on the court, and happy in her decision.

In a New York Times interview, she stated: I thought it would be an interesting journey if I decided to do this. It would give me an opportunity to share my message to young people on a bigger platform; it would give me an opportunity to get a second chance.

This is a win-win for both parties, as the WNBA can use her star power to promote the league, and Jones as we must remember is a human being and she deserves another opportunity at being the best she can be.

The Lakers hosted the Raptors last night...the game was fairly average, that is until the 4th quarter.

March Madness

I had a long day on Tuesday, and part of that was because I couldn't sleep on Monday night...nevertheless at 10:30PM EST the only thing I wanted to do was unwind and watch the Lake Show. Everyone knows that the best players around the league bring out their best at the end to ensure a victory, and no one does that better than Kobe Bryant.

Prior to his shot with 1.9 seconds to go...he knocked down 6-game winning baskets this season, and with the score knotted at 107, after a Chris Bosh 3-pointer...Bryant wanted the ball and pressure to win the game in regulation. With a calm that comes from practice and confidence, he eluded two defenders and launched his seventh game winner from the right baseline.

Much has been made about the Lakers recent 3-game losing streak, however what matters is their 47-18 record and how they finish out the regular season.

Like I often write...it's not how you start...it's how you finish.

With a lithe build, and determination of 10 men...Reggie Miller gave me hope that I could one day grow to be just like him on the basketball court.

Heart

I was always the skinny kid on my team, and while that may not seem to matter...on top of that I had really BIG glasses to add fuel to the awkward fire. My mom didn't indulge in my heart's desire of Nike sneakers, and Ralph Lauren clothing...instead she made sure that my siblings and I had a good education, home cooked meals, a house to dwell in, and a bunch of other things 13-year old children take for granted.

There was one place where my clothes from the local thrift store and poor taste in footwear didn't matter, and that was on the playground where I learned the finer points of playing basketball. Once I became one of the better defensive players in my neighborhood...I took a cue from the very skinny, unorthodox guard of the Indiana Pacers, Reggie Miller, because it was in him that I found solace in being different. At the end of the day Miller, as quirky, and nerdy as he might have appeared...was an ambitious NBA All-Star that got respect, and if and when he did not get it...then the better he played, and the more he was feared.

I began to emulate Miller as best I could even growing my hair into a "pump" or "slope" just like him. I even understood why he loved playing on the road more than at home...because when my high school team was away from our friendly confines I used the crowd against themselves. I begged them to boo and jeer me, because it didn't take me long to make them regret that day. I wouldn't score many points, but it was when I scored...or stole that ball that made the difference. Oh yeah...I was a big trash talker...I would talk to the other team...opposing coaches...as well as the rabid fans...it made me work harder to silence them, and that was better than anyone cheering for me to succeed. My father was always very negative, so in a way...the harsh environment of road games enabled me to shine, just like my hero once upon a time.

Reggie Miller will forever be one of my all time favorite players, and every time I see him, I smile because he provided so much relief for me, all through the wondrous sport that he helped make so great.

Next week on Sunday, March 14, ESPN will continue their ESPN 30 for 30 movie series...and Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks is the one that I will watch with the fervor and joy of a scrawny,13-year old boy from the playground.

The Lakers defeated the Nuggets for the first time since the '09 playoffs, and while they wore their Sunday best white uniforms...this game was far from anything routine.

By Any Means Necessary

Kobe Bryant had a poor shooting night, making 3 of 17 baskets, however he utilized a superior attack, and contributed with an array of veteran savvy moves...combined with his sheer will and intelligence. The Lake Show had a slow start, as this was a game of two starkly different halves...with Denver making the most of things in the first two quarters, and then after intermission...the home team made some adjustments, as they began to defend much better, forcing Anthony, and Billups out of their comfort zones. Then referees got in on things, with the Nuggets benefiting from the closely called game at the outset...however the same calls went to the Lakers towards the end, as Carmelo fouled out with 2:13 to go, and his team down 4.

You have to respect the way Kobe plays and approaches the game. He is still working through the changes that his many injuries have put him through, and with his jump shot faltering...he stayed aggressive in drives to the goal, which enabled him 8-trips to the free-throw line, as he went a perfect 8-8 from the stripe. He also hauled in 5 rebounds, handed out 12 assists, and had 3 steals, with 2 blocks.

This was a complete game, from a complete player, and thanks to teammates like Lamar Odom, and Ron Artest...in the end, everything today at the Staples Center, made perfect sense.

These teams will play again in the second season, and that is when the real fun will begin.

Tonight the Lakers are in Texas to build upon their already successful season.

Last night Kobe Bryant returned from an ankle injury that sidelined him for 5 games, and 18-days...however once the contest began he regained his the form that has made him so impressive year in and year out.

The Lake Show struggled against the upstart Grizzlies, nevertheless Bryant stayed confident in his abilities, making a series of baskets including the game winner to outlast the home team.

Since the beginning of the season he has connected on five game winning shots including...Miami, Milwaukee, Chicago, Sacramento, and now Memphis.

He has a particular feel and love for moments like these that will continue to amaze and confuse alike.

The best thing about Kobe sitting out is that his team went 4-1 without him, and he was able to rest not only his ankle but also his other nagging injuries, so come playoff time the team should be in good shape to defend their title.

The playoffs are right around the corner and with some recent erratic play, a few Eastern Conference teams seem ill prepared for the championship hunt.

Green with Envy

The Celtics and Cavaliers played earlier, and while they didn't match up against one another...they both lost their respective contests. If the playoffs started today, the Eastern Conference favorites range from Boston, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Orlando...however only one can win.

LeBron James has emerged to repeat as the league's MVP, but I am sure he would much rather have a championship trophy. With or without the Cavs' trade, it's in my opinion that they are a very tough club, and once the regular season is over...they will be a team that no one wants to play.

Boston on the other hand appeared to be a clear cut contender at the start, as they added Rasheed Wallace to an already proven winning roster, however I'm not sure that defensively they can hang with the likes of their post season nemesis Atlanta, not too mention the Chicago Bulls.

Atlanta has several weapons in Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby, Al Horford, Josh Smith, and Jamal Crawford off the bench. What is tricky about playing the Hawks is that they are youthful enough to run you out the building, and now they have enough experience to close out a series.

As for my sister's team...the Magic had what it takes last year...obviously as they won the east and played in their first NBA Finals. They did it with dominance from Dwight Howard in the front court, and finesse from Hedo Turkoglu at point forward, and Rashad Lewis on the perimeter. Their inability to resign Turkoglu may prove costly in the long run, but basketball is a business, and they must adapt to newcomers Vince Carter, Matt Barnes, and Jason Williams.

In the Western Conference I believe the last two teams standing will be the Nuggets and Lakers...and I don't want to go any further than that, but I do know that if and when these teams play, it's going to be nothing less than spectacular.

The questions will soon play into answers and then the focus will switch to the free agency class of 2010, and World Championship Games.

45 years ago today, Malcolm X died, and while I would arrive many years later, I learned from his example.

Respect

Malcolm is often identified with hate, and for being a radical, however I believe that he was the opposite of those labels, as his fight was for the human rights of his people in the United States. I was very interested in his life at a young age, because every February I would always learn about the same people, places, and things for Black History Month. I could never understand why Malcolm X was never taught or mentioned, so I did my own research in the same school where his legacy was never explained.

Not only did he help to instill a sense of self pride, he also sparked an interest in Muhammad Ali. Prior to my reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X, I didn't realize that they were best friends, and Malcolm was the quiet leader in the then Cassius Clay's corner.

In my youth, these stories helped me understand that my heritage and history is very diverse...and the slave trade is only part of a bigger story.

On Sunday the NBA hosted the All-Star game, however last night the Cavs matched up with the visiting Nuggets, for an entertaining duel between best friends.

Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James will forever be linked not only through basketball, but also because of their mutual respect and bond. The league is driven by stars and team dynasties, so when Kobe and LeBron get the international advertisements, and continue to do the impossible...they tend to overshadow their peers. However there are special players throughout the association, and one such person is Carmelo Anthony.

He has been given the nickname Captain America from his breakout play with Team USA, and ability to score as well as defend, making Anthony one of the best. At 6'8", 230lbs he moves like a guard, with Usain Bolt like speed.

In Cleveland, he and the Nuggets needed an extra 5-minutes playing into overtime to outlast the Cavaliers 118-116. Carmelo had 40-points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks, while James counted with a triple-double (43-points, 15 assists, 13 boards), but it was Anthony's jump shot with 1.9 remaining that delivered the win.

One thing is true, in that after everything is said and done...there will be nothing left to say or do.

There is something to be said about a person that is at the peak of their career, yet they stay humble, and work even harder as if they were an intern trying to break into the corporate world.

Through the Fire

Dwyane Wade was an afterthought to LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony leading into the NBA draft several years ago, as LeBron was the most coveted prep player since Kevin Garnett, while Anthony led 'Cuse to their first national championship. And once the dust settled in June, it was James that was selected first, Darko next, followed by Carmelo third...in what became the LeBron/Melo draft.

However it was Miami with the 5th pick that walked away the big winner in 2003 by selecting Wade, an over achieving guard from the Midwest. Three-years later the Heat captured the NBA title behind his stellar playmaking, heart, and free-throws.

On Sunday, Flash helped the East All-Stars defeat the West with 28-points...and with that he corralled the MVP honors. Last night the Heat were in town to square off against the 76ers, and afterward I spoke with him about perseverance and success.

Here is the final score on our court side conversation:

AXG: As a basketball player you have been overlooked a lot, how do you feel about that?

Wade: "It just makes you work hard...it just makes you appreciate success when you get it...it makes you appreciate your whole journey. I feel like, no matter how high I go, I feel like I have to always continue to prove myself, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

AXG: Talk about the All-Star MVP award.

Wade: "It felt good man...first of all to be a part of that game...to be a part of the historical event that went on, and to be able to hoist that MVP trophy above my head really felt good. I enjoyed it!"

AXG: You are sometimes the forgotten name among the superstars, why is that?

Wade: "You know what...it drives me, and of course hopefully until I am done playing this game I will continue to shut people up, or continue to prove myself. All I ask for in this game is respect, and when it is not given, I go out and I try to take it. Like I keep saying...it's fine, everything in life happens for a reason, so I will continue to keep going."

AXG: What do your All-Star peers think about you?

Wade: "Melo had a great game...if the West would have won he would have been MVP, and you know me and LeBron we both had good games. At the end of the game we all came together you know me, Melo, LeBron, CP...you know group hug, because we're all close, and it's a relationship outside of basketball...so just as well as I was happy for LeBron when he won his two [All-Star] MVP's I was right there, and I know that he felt the same way."

AXG: What does the '03 draft class mean to you?

Wade: "It's always going to be part of a conversation that you're going to have to mention '03. When you talk about the great drafts, there were some great drafts, and people will always argue over who was the best draft class, but you would never say that without mentioning '03, and that's a good thing to be a part of."

I often marvel at these games, however what I find more mind bending than the numbers, is the fact that both Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant are from West Philly. They have walked the same streets and played at the same courts where I did, and as a Philadelphian it gives me a sense of pride. I never met Dippy, but it was Bean that challenged me to a game the first time I met him once upon a time.

Little did I know he would grow up to become such a dominant force in the game, and never in a million years would I have thought that I would be writing about it.

There is a phrase that I heed whenever times are more difficult than usual...and it simply states that life's not fair.

Get Familiar

Basketball is my catharsis, and while I don't participate on an organized team anymore, attending games, and writing about it, helps fill the void from not playing. It is now within certain athletes that I can see myself, which allows for a vicarious euphoria that I once had as a shooting guard.

All-Star Weekend is currently taking place in Texas, and while last night's so-called dunk contest failed to entertain, the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge proved what I had been told a few weeks ago in a conversation with Caron Butler after a Wizards win over the Kings.

Sacramento's Tyreke Evans walked into this weekend's setting a heavy favorite for Rookie of the Year honors, and by halftime on Friday, he had closed the door on any doubts about his basketball prowess. The last thing I want to do is crown him, and make predictions...however the things he is able to do on the court is greater than his follow neophytes.

I covered Evans during his prep days at American Christian and while I liked his strength, and IQ, I didn't think his jump shot or play to the crowd style was the makings for an elite player. Let this serve as an official record that I was wrong. He's matured, and his time in this league is now. I'm not jumping on the bandwagon...I just feel that I didn't appreciate him as much as I should have...nevertheless I do now, and I stand corrected.

I started to notice a change last season during his freshman campaign in Memphis...however I saw him play numerous times, and I think it was the accessibility to him that pulled the wool over my eyes. The same scenario played itself out when I watched Kobe Bryant go from Philadelphia's main line, to the Los Angeles Lakers. I knew he was good, and I respected his talent...but I had no idea that he would become the best guard in the world.

These are interesting times for me, as I move ahead with things going on in my life...and running parallel to that are my responsibilities as a journalist...documenting the happenings of others.

Hugo earned the MVP award leading the first year players to a 140-128 win over the sophomores...and he did it with the same heart, flair, and toughness that he always had as a child growing up on the painful, unforgiving, basketball courts of Chester, Pennsylvania.

Preparation

Here on the east coast our basketball world has a left coast bias...as in if the Lakers aren't involved...then we don't see or hear too much about. So the headlines today are about the Nets' 48th loss, and naturally, the Lake Show and their winning streak without Kobe...it's even gotten to the point that the experts are saying the team is better without Bryant. Nevertheless, the Warriors hosted the Clippers last night, and while that may or may not move you...it was a foreshadowing of Stephen Curry's future.

There are several things I enjoy about him...from his God fearing family of athletes, to his nonchalant calm in dire moments of a big game...he is going to become one of the great ones. In my own selfish way, I wish that he was drafted by the Knicks so the world could witness what I'm talking about.

In a conversation with LeBron last season he raved about Curry, saying how much time and effort he puts into his craft. In an interesting twist, James isn't the only basketball prodigy born in Akron. Stephen was welcomed to this Earth by way of the Ohio town, when his father Dell played for the neighboring Cavaliers...he was later selected by the Charlotte Hornets in the '88 expansion draft.

Dell enjoyed a good career in the league as he passed down the skills to his children...and his wife Sonya was a standout colligate volleyball player, so it's safe to say that the blessings come from both sides.

Against the Clips Stephen registered his first triple-double with 36-points (five 3-pointers in the 1st quarter), 13 assists, and 10 boards en route to a Warriors 132-102 win. The more things change...the more they stay the same, and for the Curry family that is a very good thing!

I've been a fan of comics for a good number of years...and like sports there are triumphs and tragedy.

Heroic

About five years ago I was asked to be a guest on a college radio show at UNC Chapel Hill...and when the host introduced me...he said that I was the Clark Kent of the sneaker game. I was flattered by his words, as I grew up reading about and watching Superman.

I never asked him what he meant by that, nevertheless I understood...because Kent is the secret identity of Superman...which leads me to Dwight Howard. His nickname is Superman because of what he can do on the basketball court, so he and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum, yet on the same page.

His new "This is Sportscenter" commercial is classic, as I look forward to seeing it on television.

The Magic are playing well, and with a former Orlando center now taking residence in Cleveland, the upcoming playoffs are certain to be nothing less than monumental.
