Magical
"I'mma need a day off, I think I'll call Ferris up..."
Kanye West - Gotta Have It
Things have been very interesting around the NBA the past 2-weeks, as the Heat, and Thunder continue to win...while Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin is getting on the job training.
Consistency
It's the All-Star break and while 90-percent of the league is enjoying the much needed time off...the other 10-percent have arrived in Orlando ready for the 61st midseason classic. I am currently watching the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge high above the court in section 202 of the Amway Center...however what's more important is what will happen from the moment this weekend ends, and the second half of the season begins?
Will the Lakers make a trade, where will Dwight Howard go, are the Clippers for real, and can the 76ers get their groove back?
The month of March is around the corner and the answers to these questions and many others will soon be revealed.

Points of Interest
"Phife this, Phife that, where you going, where you at?"
Phife Dog - Butter
Yesterday Jorge Posada retired from the New York Yankees, after a a storied career which spanned 17-years in pinstripes. What was most intriguing, is that he played entirely with one club, and in this day something like that is as rare as it is admirable.
Change
The NBA is heating up, after a late post lock-out start. The complexity that is the National Basketball Association is always interesting, and now that the dust has settled...the talk of free-agency continues to loom large over a few teams. There are two names that keep owners, general managers, agents, and fans alike up at night...hoping, and praying that they can sign the likes of Deron Williams, or Dwight Howard.
Williams and Howard are the flavors of the month, and it won't stop until one or both of them are traded before the deadline in March. Deron Williams wants to stay with the Nets if they land Dwight Howard, and interestingly enough, Howard has New Jersey at the top of his list because of his former Olympic teammate Deron Williams. I see a theme here, nevertheless if nothing happens, which I highly doubt...they can sign with any franchise as free agents this summer.
As I stated at the outset it's extremely rare for an athlete to stay put for the duration of their career, no matter what the case in Orlando, if Dwight Howard stays or leaves...he became the all-time scoring leader for the franchise as of yesterday surpassing Nick Anderson.
Stay tuned sports fans, as this season will only bring more surprises.

Ubiquitous

"They never leave, they're here to stay..."
Mos Def - History
Nobody remembers who came in second place...so when you talk about the 2009 NBA Finals, the Orlando Magic have become can afterthought.
Definition
If the season ended today, many people would pencil in the Lakers and Cavaliers in a highly anticipated Kobe versus LeBron, Nike Most Valuable Puppets championship...however basketball like everything else in life has no guarantee.
The Magic with a pillar in Dwight Howard and floor general in Jameer Nelson have the components to make return trip to the promise land. Atlanta, Boston, and Cleveland are playing well, and because of that fact, the reining conference champions are left without their proper respect.
I asked a few of the Magic players what their thoughts were on the topic:
AXG: What's the state of this team?
Dwight Howard: It's a different team from last year for one...and now we're starting to gel together, so the biggest difference from last year's team is that last year we had all been together for a long time so we had great chemistry, and now we're just trying to learn to play with each other.
AXG: Where is the love and respect for this team?
Dwight Howard: We are still the only people who believe in us. There are still people that think we won't get as far as we did last year, but our main concern is finishing out the regular season strong without any injuries. I don't think they respect us...we still have to get that respect from people. We are the defending Eastern Conference champs and you let everybody else tell it...it's like we didn't even win it. We understand that, we are just going to continue to work on our game, and come playoff time we're going to be ready.
AXG: Jameer...you and Dwight sat and watched the Lakers celebrate the championship last year...can you speak on that?
Jameer Nelson: I did it with him...he wanted me to stay out there to soak it in...because you don't want anyone to celebrate on your home court, and we don't want that feeling anymore. What we did was try to soak it in, and use that as motivation.
AXG: How will that help your team as you make this run into the playoffs?
Jameer Nelson: Well we know the feeling...and we don't want that again, so like I told the guys earlier...each time we step on the court, it's a different experience and it prepares you for another game, and another situation similar to it.
AXG: Can you explain your last meeting against the Lakers, and Kobe Bryant specifically?
Matt Barnes: With great players like that you have to make them work. I think a lot of attention came to it because it was the Lakers and they [Magic] played each other in the Finals last year. I just thought it was a physical game...back and forth and the fact that it was Kobe and someone was standing up to him...everyone made a big deal about it, but you have to really make someone like him work. He's the greatest player in the world and you can't let him have the mental advantage over you as well. So I tried to stay in it and make him take as many shots as possible to get his points.
AXG: What do you bring to this team?
Matt Barnes: I'm trying to change the mentality around here. You know word on the street and around the league was that Orlando was soft, and it's nothing that one person is going to change, I think it's a team overhaul and mentality that you're not just going to come into our house and push us around. I think the team has taken to that and that's a good thing to roll with.

Varsity Blues

"It's not how you start...it's how you finish..."
The playoffs are right around the corner and with some recent erratic play, a few Eastern Conference teams seem ill prepared for the championship hunt.
Green with Envy
The Celtics and Cavaliers played earlier, and while they didn't match up against one another...they both lost their respective contests. If the playoffs started today, the Eastern Conference favorites range from Boston, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Orlando...however only one can win.
LeBron James has emerged to repeat as the league's MVP, but I am sure he would much rather have a championship trophy. With or without the Cavs' trade, it's in my opinion that they are a very tough club, and once the regular season is over...they will be a team that no one wants to play.
Boston on the other hand appeared to be a clear cut contender at the start, as they added Rasheed Wallace to an already proven winning roster, however I'm not sure that defensively they can hang with the likes of their post season nemesis Atlanta, not too mention the Chicago Bulls.
Atlanta has several weapons in Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby, Al Horford, Josh Smith, and Jamal Crawford off the bench. What is tricky about playing the Hawks is that they are youthful enough to run you out the building, and now they have enough experience to close out a series.
As for my sister's team...the Magic had what it takes last year...obviously as they won the east and played in their first NBA Finals. They did it with dominance from Dwight Howard in the front court, and finesse from Hedo Turkoglu at point forward, and Rashad Lewis on the perimeter. Their inability to resign Turkoglu may prove costly in the long run, but basketball is a business, and they must adapt to newcomers Vince Carter, Matt Barnes, and Jason Williams.
In the Western Conference I believe the last two teams standing will be the Nuggets and Lakers...and I don't want to go any further than that, but I do know that if and when these teams play, it's going to be nothing less than spectacular.
The questions will soon play into answers and then the focus will switch to the free agency class of 2010, and World Championship Games.
I love this game!

Superman
"You need a baller like I..."
Jay-Z - What They Gonna Do
I've been a fan of comics for a good number of years...and like sports there are triumphs and tragedy.
Heroic
About five years ago I was asked to be a guest on a college radio show at UNC Chapel Hill...and when the host introduced me...he said that I was the Clark Kent of the sneaker game. I was flattered by his words, as I grew up reading about and watching Superman.
I never asked him what he meant by that, nevertheless I understood...because Kent is the secret identity of Superman...which leads me to Dwight Howard. His nickname is Superman because of what he can do on the basketball court, so he and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum, yet on the same page.
His new "This is Sportscenter" commercial is classic, as I look forward to seeing it on television.
The Magic are playing well, and with a former Orlando center now taking residence in Cleveland, the upcoming playoffs are certain to be nothing less than monumental.
Stay tuned!

I covered the NBA Finals this year, and with it being my first time and all, I not only interviewed the players from both teams, but I also filmed a lot of behind the scenes footage. I think the video turned out pretty well, and I'm already looking forward to the upcoming season. I'm thinking about flying out to LA for the ring ceremony in October...stay tuned.

I'm in Florida for the NBA Finals, and while it looks a little like Southern California...things are somewhat different, yet the same.
Superman
The Amway Arena is a welcome change of venue for the Orlando Magic as they...like the Poison Clan have won at home, while losing on the road. These are my first of any NBA championship series so I too had to shake off the pregame jitters. It was quite surprising as I've been writing for a few years, but once I was able to soak everything in, the game began and Kobe Bryant put on a 1st quarter show.
Blue Magic had an excellent game from start to finish aside from their inability to stop turning the ball over, however they were able to play a great swarming defense to cause a few key turnovers, including one on Bryant in the waning seconds. In the end they outlasted the Lake Show 108-104.
LA leads 2 game to 1...
My keys to the Magic's Game 3 win are as follows:
- Orlando playing at home (They are a great team overall, but nothing beats playing at home)
- Play and composure of Skip to my Lou...says Alston, "The league is a make-and-miss league - first two games I'm missing...I look horrible. Tonight I'm making, I look good. That's what this league is about. It's a make-and-miss league."
- Magic offense highlighted by 4 players in double figures, none with less than 18 points
- Total team defense, described by Kobe as "They threw the whole kitchen sink, and they did a great job staying on my body. They brought help from the weak side, simple as that."
Today at the media availability after the Lakers practice/Magic shoot around, I was able to catch up with Bryant, and Odom, as well Jameer Nelson, and Courtney Lee. I noticed that the teams were extremely loose and comfortable, and have forgotten about the previous 3 games, as they focus on tomorrow and Game 4.
I spoke to everyone in the designated media areas, except for Kobe who I saw along with legendary trainer Tim Grover in the hallway adjacent to the court. The first thing he said was that he saw me last night, but he didn't have an opportunity to say hello. Coincidentally, as I typed that sentence above Dwight Howard walked past the media work room, and politely said hello and waved.
I'm really loving it here...

I wrote a story yesterday entitled Antidote...so today's entry is about something so potent that nothing can help the victim once the venom is introduced into their system.
Hunger
The Los Angeles Lakers enter Game 1 of the NBA Finals tonight with the stigma and stain from an embarrassing championship loss a year ago in Boston. With that pain still fresh in their hearts and minds, you can expect the Lake Show to play with a heightened sense of urgency.
Kobe Bryant...also known as the Black Mamba is the most deadly professional basketball player on planet Earth. Recently he has been more focused than usual, as I'm sure he can all but taste the sweet nectar of victory. I do not want to take anything away from Blue Magic as they have some serious weapons, not too mention the current Defensive Player of the Year in Dwight Howard.
Like I always say...I don't make predictions, I just watch the games and interview the athletes...nevertheles below are the keys to a Lakers win, and parade in the City of Angeles:
- Kobe Bryant would like nothing more than to win another championship. He has told me this numerous times this season and just like last year, I truly believe that he will continue to practice and play until he quenches his insatiable thirst.
- Luke Walton comes off the bench, however he does all the little things that are add up to the team's success. Between that, his veteran leadership, and his goal of winning his 1st title in 3 tries is enough to fuel the fire within him. You must remember that his Hall of Fame father Bill Walton has 2 rings (Portland '77, and Boston '86), and Luke would like to join him ASAP.
- Lamar Odom played extremely well during the last 2 games against the Nuggets, and if he can keep that up, then it could prove costly for the Magic.
- Pau Gasol, and Andrew Bynum individually will have their problems with Dwight Howard, but as a united front, they can be unstoppable. The offense is there...its the defense that the Lakers front court needs to focus on.

The best two teams in the association will vie for league supremacy once the NBA Finals begin on Thursday.
Blue Magic
I was watching Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals last week with my friend Madeleine, and I expressed to her that the it didn't matter who won the contest because either team would have to play against the Lakers and their ultimate weapon Kobe Bryant.
She's not too high on Kobe, and I tried to explain that anytime your nickname is the Black Mamba, which interestingly enough is Africa's most dangerous and feared snake...then opposing teams had better pack a lunch, because its going to be a long day.
I often refer to her as a "tough crowd", because she doesn't go for the popular vote or opinion...and she calmly turned to me and said that Dwight Howard is the antidote to the Mamba's poison.
Touche'...point well taken.
If Orlando is in fact a remedy to what the Lake Show can do, then it would rely on the factors below:
- Dwight Howard is the most dominant center in the NBA. With a name like Superman...he can do it all. In this era of power forwards that moonlight at the center position, Howard is young, nonetheless proven as he anchored the Magic to the championship round. He had 40 points, and 14 rebounds in the deciding game against the Cavaliers.
- Rashard Lewis has played well this season as an All-Star, and he has continued to raise the level of his game throughout the playoffs. His height allows him play various positions on the court, making him difficult to defend.
- Hedo Turkoglu proves to be just as difficult to guard as he uses his size, ball handling skills, and sharp shooting to carry his team in victory.
- Standout Rookie Courtney Lee has been playing like a savvy veteran, on both ends of the floor, with hustle, offense, and defense.
- Jameer Nelson was an All-Star this year as the Magic had three players for the Eastern squad, however he did not play in the mid season classic because of a shoulder injury, which has also hindered him from playing for the entire second half of the year. He has proven to give the Los Angeles Laker serious trouble with averages over 20 points per game, and if he can contribute on a high level then his "X" factor could pay great dividends for Orlando.

Senioritis

Anxious

Eager
"But what can I do...I gotta stay true, cause deep down I'm still a G..."
Trey Songz - Can't Help But Wait
The media has everyone looking forward to a Kobe versus LeBron showdown, however unless "they" know about something I don't...then the conference finals determine who will play for the 'chip, and we still have a long way to go before June 4th.
Growth
When I was in the 12th grade, one of my teachers made a comment about senioritis. Until that day I had never heard that term...in fact I thought it was something lame that he made up, as I went through my entire final year of high school not knowing what the word meant.
This morning my gears were turning about the eastern and western conference finals, and while the Cavaliers are down in their series against Orlando, and the Lake Show are going back and forth with Denver, it seems to me that LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have this thing called senioritis...
So I can't write a story about a word that my English teacher made up...and I cannot use something that never knew the meaning of it can I...so the first thing I did was Google the word, and what I found was interesting.
Read about it here: Senioritis
In a nutshell, it is used when students work so hard to get the point of graduation, and then they coast, because they understand that things will be over very soon. Now don't get me wrong, LeBron and Carmelo are playing VERY well, however they are so close but so far to winning the NBA Finals. Are they coasting, and going through the motions...NO they are not.
So where does my theory make sense...well their respective teams are going through the motions. Nothing against the Lakers or Magic, but each team hosts an Olympic superstar and it is collectively that the series and championship will be won as a team.
The Lakers experienced poor team play and senioritis last year against the Celtics...and now they are playing to get back to the big stage of the Finals. As Yogi Berra once proclaimed..."it ain't over 'til it's over..." Anyone can win either series and play for the title...yes you read that correctly.
Tonight the Cavs/Magic series resumes in Cleveland. Game time is 8:30PM EST, and I don't make predictions...I just watch the games.

The Future

Excellence
"It's new, it's out of the ordinary, it's rather extraordinary..."
The Fresh Prince - Brand New Funk
The Eastern and Western Conference Finals are some of the best games of pro basketball that I've "witnessed" in a good while. The teams are so evenly matched, and I know the fact that the Fantastic 4...or should I say, leaders of this new school, competed last summer to win a gold medal...has everything to do with everything I see today.
World Renown
I don't find it interesting to see the four teams standing within the NBA Playoffs...bring out the best in each other night in and night out. I covered the association last season, and the biggest difference in Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwight Howard is their Olympic experience. They, as well as their respective teams have reaped the benefits, so I decided to test my theory...and made a few phone calls.
Below is the score on my Olympic conversations with LeBron, and Dwight...how convenient that I get these interviews just in time for the Orlando/Cleveland series...
Talk about August 24, 2008:
LeBron: "It was such a journey to get to the point that we got to on the 24th of August...it was an unbelievable feeling for me...to fulfill a dream and accomplish it the way that we did, and the fashion that we did...going out dominating the field, and then having a test at the end...and being able to win the game. It definitely was a dream come true, and a lot of people set out dreams and don't get an opportunity to conquer them, and I was one of the few...I mean including myself and the other 11 guys, and the coaching staff, did a great job of preparing ourselves. We brought back the number 1 prize, and it was big...really big!"
Talk about the Olympic experience:
Dwight: "All of us were always together everyday...going to the gym, and then to McDonald's...that was the biggest thing...that was the highlight of the day, after a hard day at practice we would go to McDonald's and chill. That whole experience just brought us closer...it was just all about basketball. It was about life and developing friendships that last forever. I think me and Carlos, and Chris Bosh really bonded...we talk a lot everyday, we're always emailing each other, and checking up on one another, and we need that. We have people going through the same stuff we're going through, and it makes it a lot better."

The Eastern and Western Conference Finals are some of the best games of this year...and what I like best is that each team boasts a key member of the 2008 Olympic team.
Full 48
The Cleveland Cavaliers outlasted the Orlando Magic 96-95, however just like the Lakers in their first game against Denver...the Lake Show won, but they really should have taken a loss.
The Cavs blew another big lead, and the Magic were about to win 95-93 to go up 2-0 in the series...however after Hedo Turkoglu all but closed the door on Cleveland, LeBron James sank his only 3-pointer of the game with 1 second left in the 4th quarter.
If this were a baseball game, then James hit the walk-off homerun, as the venue now switches to Florida for Game 3 on Sunday.
He are a few key points from tonight:
The Magic have too many weapons (Howard, Turkoglu, Lewis, Pietrus, and Lee), and if they play their game...they can actually win this series.
Hedo Turkoglu has been playing at the point guard position...in Game 1 he had 14 assists, tonight he had 4 assists, with 21 points.
Orlando split the first 2 games in Cleveland, that's all you can ask from a road team.
Cleveland plays extremely well, and they have to learn to finish Orlando out...as tonight's game will show, both teams have to play for the full 48 minutes.
Mo Williams seemed to find his stride, so expect the guard play from the Cavs to get better in Game 3.

Jay-Z - Can't Knock the Hustle (Featuring Mary J. Blige)
Cleveland had yet to be tested in these 2009 NBA Playoffs, and as Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals began, it looked as if nothing had changed but the faces on the visiting team.
Statement
This game was a tale of two halves, as LeBron James and the Cavaliers jumped out to a 15-point lead at halftime, out playing the Magic during the first 24 minutes. The most amazing thing of the first half however was a Magic moment, as Dwight Howard threw down a serious dunk...breaking the shot clock clean off the backboard.
In the 3rd and 4th quarters Orlando seemed to wear down the home team in a basketball battle of attrition. Cleveland mirrored Denver's Game 1, in that LeBron James carried his team with 49 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds in a loss...like Carmelo Anthony's 39 in a futile effort.
The Magic used all of their weapons to get the 107-106 victory, handing the Cavs their 3rd home loss of the year.
Dwight Howard had 30 points, and 13 boards...Rashard Lewis added 22 points with his biggest shot...a 3-pointer with 31.6 seconds to go, pulling his team ahead 104-103. Hedo Turkoglu rounded out the balanced attack with 15 points, and 14 assists.
Game 2 is Friday night in Cleveland.

Lil' Wayne - Swagga Like Us
I watched any and everything that dealt with basketball in my youth, as my favorite television program was NBA Inside Stuff. In fact the only reason why I went to college was so that I could learn and study TV and Film...so that one day I could host my own show.
Hoop Dreams
Halftime was always my favorite part of an NBA telecast because that is when they would show interviews with the star players. I'd watch them and envision myself as the host speaking with Charles Barkley, or Johnny Dawkins. The thing that I didn't like was how generic the segment was, so I knew that if ever given a chance to shine in front of a camera, that I would always do my best to deliver to the audience a superior product.
I made my first TV appearance on ESPN2's Cold Pizza in February 2004. The show aired live, and from that moment on, I've worked hard to keep my name relevant and image clean in an effort for more opportunities on camera.
In the meantime, I started my own web series on YouTube, and facebook, entitled GAME TIME, and in the episode above, I was able to speak to Dwight Howard in the fashion that not only makes people smile and enjoy the show, but it also brings a smile to my face, and heart...just like I had dreamed many years ago.

The NBA Sprite Rising Stars Dunk Contest hasn't been the same since the best of the best dunkers, don't participate anymore...and while Dwight Howard is very deserving to vie for the trophy, things would be a lot more interesting if Vince Carter came out of retirement to challenge him.
Change
I always believe in the adage that the more things change the more they stay the same. First things first, Allen Iverson finally cut his braids off, and he now has a regular low-styled haircut like the rest of us over 25 crowd.
In other news out of Phoenix, last night during All-Star Saturday night TNT analyst Kenny "The Jet" Smith reported that LeBron James would enter the dunk contest next year, and if that wasn't good enough, fellow analyst Reggie Miller just about begged for Andre Iguodala to join him in what would be an epic battle of great high flyers.
Smith and Miller mentioned how the NBA greats have not only played a part in the dunk contest, but they have also won, so for King James to preliminarily put his name into the ring, he could very well walk the path that Dr. J, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant have done before him.
2010, is going to be one of the most watched and interesting NBA seasons since MJ retired.

"Make you all jump along to the education...brother's gonna work it out, so stop chasing..."
Chuck D - Brothers Gonna Work It Out
adidas is the official sponsor of the NBA, so it only makes sense that they make shoes for some of the league's marquee players. It's no secret that I write about shoes regularly for various publications, as well as I have worked on a few sneaker commercials...so I've written all that to say, it's fitting for me to take the time to write about footwear here on GAME TIME.
Anything is Possible
adidas has long been a leader within the footwear and apparel industry, and the same has been true in basketball. From Oscar Robertson, Earl Monroe, and Pistol Pete, to Tracy McGrady, Dwight Howard, and Kevin Garnett, the tradition has been established and passed down.
At the beginning of the season the brand with the three stripes released the Team Signature Commander and Creator series with two footwear designs to meet the specific needs of players and their unique roles on the court.
Starting today adidas continues the evolution of the line with the TS Bounce Commander, which will be worn by Dwight Howard, KG, Tim Duncan, Josh Smith, and Michael Beasley.
I interviewed Dwight Howard for BET News in June prior to his training for the Olympics, and since then he and I have decided to work on a few things during the second half of the season, so stay tuned...in the meantime you can check out the adidas website to see exclusive videos featuring Howard as well as a few surprises.

Beanie Sigel - Adrenaline
Two-weeks after Kobe Bryant scored an unfathomable 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, he and I were to sit down for an interview in Los Angeles. I made the 3,000-mile trek from Philly International to LAX...from there it was a short hop to the Lakers front office and practice facility in El Segundo.
I took my place among the media and waited patiently for Bryant. He emerged from the locker room and informed me that he had something more pressing to do, and that he would call me later. I reluctantly agreed and proceeded to call Rob Pelinka, his agent. Since I had more time than I would have liked on my hands, I ventured to LA to take in the sights, window shop, and perhaps head over to Fat Burger or Carl's Jr. for some savory west coast flavor. As the day progressed and light turned into shadows, then darkness, I realized that my interview with Bryant wasn't going to happen, at least not on this day...and just when I gave up all hope...my cell phone rang. It was almost to the effect that an alarm clock has during the serenity of REM sleep.
I was excited...this was the call I'd been waiting my entire career for, so I answered in a very non-descript voice, with my Philly twang...Hah-LO. The voice on the other line belonged to Pelinka, as he told me that he had Kobe on the line, and that he is really sorry...something came up.
"What up Kolb?" I said. "My bad Ant...I couldn't do it today. I had some stuff to take care of with Vanessa." He replied, sounding as if he was torn between his family, and his fam. "It's all good man. We can sit down another time...but you know what?" "What's up?" responses Bryant. "I want to write a story unlike no other. I really want to take it from West Philly to LA and back again. I want this story to hit hard man...I want this to set all the records straight, as to inspire the young bawhs! You're the DARK KNIGHT." There was that brief awkward silence, and then he said, 'yeah! I have some DARK KNIGHT in me!
I have since interviewed him numerous times, as I feel that day was a proving ground...a trail by fire if you will, showing KB that I didn't take anything for granted, but that I am a journalist and if I didn't first succeed, that I will try, try, again. TV, print, Internet, or otherwise, he has always made time for me, no matter the medium.
Hard work and diligence are words that come to mind when thinking of Kobe, and I know that he can recognize my pain, hunger, work ethic, and respect, and in turn I've been rewarded with one-on-one interviews and a genuine friendship.
This morning, I woke up early with pre-game jitters as if I had to suit up and play against Australia. In a crazy moment, that I am almost embarrassed to admit, I fell victim to the media hype surrounding Team USA. I know that Team USA is for real, and I understand that they will win the gold, however every time I read something or watch TV, the "experts" are warning me about the opposing team. I don't know much about the teams of the world, however I know that any team with Kobe, LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard and Jason Kidd has more than a fair chance at VIC-TOR-Y, as Johnny Drama would say.
I prayed promptly before game time, giving God thanks, all the while asking for grace for the players and the outcome of the game. Yes its that serious for me. Nevertheless, I'm so upset that I allow the so-called basketball guru's scare me like something of out an Orson Welles broadcast. I know better, because I know Kobe Bean Bryant, and he won't stop until the Redeem Team lives up to their moniker.
If you ever watch Kobe play you will see how good he really is. The man is talented. Say what you want about him, however your eyes will not deceive you. It is in those few instances that you have to pay attention, because he can turn it on at the bat of an eye. During today's match against the Aussies, I saw that familiar look in his body language that reads you can't stop me, and this game is over!
When Bryant starts shaking his head, and when you can read the word NO on his lips, then the opposing team needs to run for cover, because its not over until he says so. He shook his head to the tune of 25 points and 5 assists.
Team USA 116 - Australia 85
So how did he get like this? That's the million dollar question, and I've asked him as recently as June. His answer, "I'm just determined. I don't know...I've always been like this."
Kobe Bryant is not only the league MVP, but he is also as most consider him, to be the best player on the planet.
The date was March 6, 1996 and my best friend Brandon King and I went to go cheer on the Minnesota Timberwolves against our hapless Philadelphia 76ers. We were cheering against the home team not because we wanted them to “tank it” and get Allen Iverson in June…no, nothing like that. It was because we were there to cheer on University of Pennsylvania alum Jerome “Pooh” Allen, who was so legendary in the neighborhood, that he had the entire city trying to emulate his signature through the legs, behind the back cross over move. I don’t remember seeing Allen play because little did I know as a fresh faced teen that the NBA is a business, and when you have a high school player on your squad that was drafted with the 5th pick overall, he plays. While the accomplished Ivy League, and Philadelphia hero that was taken in the 2nd round, 20th pick, 49th overall sits the bench, and continues to work extremely hard in practice. I didn’t understand the politics, but it was there that I decided that I didn’t like Flip Saunders as a head coach.
Minnesota won the game 103-90, and it was the play of Kevin Garnett that really stood out. Here he is not that much older than I and he is playing in the NBA. I was both encouraged and perplexed. You have to understand that when I was growing up playing ball in the Sonny Hill League, the message revolved around two things, education and the game. Even the legend Rasheed Wallace went to college, so when Garnett skipped higher learning, people were surprised. Which brings me to another point…I was so frustrated with Flip Saunders for not putting Jerome Allen in the game that I began to concentrate less on the Wolves, and more on the people around me. As I scanned the audience for a fine “hunny”, I saw a young man that looked as if he were studying for a final exam, rather than watching a basketball game. It was Kobe Bryant, the younger brother of my crush Sharia. You see his oldest sister Sharia played volleyball at Temple University and at 5′10″ she not only excelled at the sport, she made it look GOOD. I became friends with her thinking that if I couldn’t get a date, I could at least befriend her.
One day after mustering up some courage, I told her that I play basketball and she smiled and says ‘yeah, well you can’t beat my little brother! I didn’t know who she was talking about so I said, ‘go get your brother…and a few days later I was standing in front of her 6′3″ younger brother with a look that spelled anger, so after denying the facts, I naturally wanted to get on his good side and befriend him also.
By the time I saw Kobe at that 76ers game I was comfortable enough with him to speak, but I decided not to because of the way he was “enjoying” the game. I never saw anything like it and by June 26, everything made sense. Bryant was drafted 13th by the Charlotte Hornets and later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Vlade Divac.
He was in fact studying that game, and more specifically he was concentrating on Kevin Garnett and how he faired as a high school prodigy against the likes of the NBA. It was no secret in Philadelphia that Kobe had been practicing at St. Joseph’s University against the 76ers, giving Jerry Stackhouse headaches, so he didn’t lack for confidence, I just figured that he wanted to see someone else put in work to make his argument to enter the draft a little more solid.
It was the classic scenario of student learning from teacher.
Now Bryant is the teacher, and the world is his classroom.
